HURCO Spindles – Machining Centers from Indianapolis

HURCO – Control expertise with in-house machine manufacturing

Anyone familiar with HURCO thinks first of its control systems. That’s no coincidence. Gerald Roch and Edward Humston founded the company in Indianapolis in 1968 with a clear vision: to develop a CNC control system that machine operators could understand right on the shop floor, without a degree in computer science and without a long training period. Back then, computers were mainly found in universities, not in manufacturing facilities. HURCO wanted to change that.

Today, HURCO employs over 700 people worldwide, manufactures in Taiwan, Italy, and the United States, and has subsidiaries in numerous countries. Since 1988, HURCO Werkzeugmaschinen GmbH in Pliening, near Munich, has been responsible for Germany and Europe. With approximately 100 employees, it serves as the company’s European headquarters.

What is often overlooked: HURCO not only develops and manufactures control systems, but also complete machine tools. Its product portfolio ranges from 3- to 5-axis machining centers to gantry machines and horizontal machining centers, as well as lathes. Each machine is equipped with its own control system.

Machine designs for flexible workshop production

Since its founding, HURCO has consistently focused on single-unit and small-batch manufacturers. In these operations, setup times and programming effort determine whether a job remains profitable. This is precisely where the concept comes into play.

The MAX 5 controller with WinMax software is considered one of the fastest dialog-based controllers on the market. New operators can be trained in just a few days, workpieces can be programmed directly from 3D models, and cycle times are significantly reduced thanks to UltiMotion technology.

That is why HURCO machines are particularly common in contract manufacturing facilities, in tool and mold making, and in the medical technology sector. They are used wherever flexibility is more important than high-volume production. Machines such as the VMX machining centers, BX gantry machines, and TMX turning centers all follow a clear principle: control systems and machines from a single source.

Design and Configuration of HURCO Motorized Spindles

In terms of basic design, HURCO motor spindles do not differ significantly from those of other manufacturers. They consist of a spindle motor, rotor, stator, cooling system, tool holder, tool interface (such as SK 40 or HSK), and spindle bearings.

The key factor is matching the system to the specific machine design. The 3-axis VMX machining centers utilize AC spindle motors with speeds of up to 12,000 rpm and power ratings of up to 13.4 kW. Larger 5-axis centers feature liquid-cooled, integrated spindles, some with double-wound motors. The turning centers of the TM and TMX series operate with permanently lubricated spindles, which are designed for low maintenance and enable long service life.

Typical stresses and damage patterns during operation

HURCO spindles are designed for continuous operation in workshop production. Common causes of failure include bearing wear due to high spindle operating hours, thermal overload caused by insufficient coolant supply, and mechanical damage resulting from tool or collision incidents.

Early warning signs such as changes in surface quality, unusual noises, or increasing bearing play should be taken seriously. If you act promptly, you can schedule a planned service. If you wait, you risk a complete breakdown.
